Yellow Alert for Seven Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for seven districts in Himachal Pradesh Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi warning of heavy rainfall at several locations. Other parts of the state are also likely to experience rainfall, though no specific alerts have been issued for those areas.

The southwest monsoon, active since June 20, 2025, has brought significant rainfall across Himachal Pradesh. On Monday, heavy rainfall in Shimla and other areas triggered landslides, leading to widespread disruptions. The state continues to face unpredictable weather, with forecasts predicting rain and cloudy conditions for the next five to seven days.

Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions

Heavy rainfall has caused significant infrastructure damage, with approximately 359 roads, including three national highways, closed due to landslides and flooding. The Kiratpur-Manali Highway, a critical route between Kullu and Mandi, remains blocked, stranding hundreds of vehicles and disrupting travel. Authorities have advised against unnecessary travel, particularly in landslide-prone areas, to ensure public safety.

Power and Water Supply Challenges

The monsoon has severely impacted essential services, with around 760 transformers non-functional, leading to widespread power outages. Additionally, sediment accumulation in drinking water schemes has caused water supply disruptions, particularly in Kullu and Mandi districts. A total of 132 water distribution schemes have been affected, exacerbating challenges for residents.

Agricultural and Economic Losses

Crop Damage

Farmers and horticulturists are facing substantial losses due to heavy rainfall, with crops such as apples, tomatoes, and cauliflowers severely affected. The persistent rains have damaged fields, threatening livelihoods and adding to the economic burden on agricultural communities.

Broader Economic Impact

The Public Works Department has reported damages amounting to ₹12,167.58 million, while the electricity department has incurred losses of ₹1,394.69 million. Additionally, 550 transformers have been destroyed, and cloudburst incidents have wiped out shops, fields, and homes, with several vehicles swept away by floodwaters.

Cancellation of Kinnour Kailash Yatra

Safety Concerns and Official Orders

Due to continuous rainfall, falling rocks, and dense fog, the Kinnour district administration has canceled the Kinnour Kailash Yatra with immediate effect. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma issued an order under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing tragic incidents and loss of life due to adverse weather conditions. The yatra, which began on July 15 and was scheduled to continue until August 30, has been repeatedly suspended due to weather uncertainties. So far, four pilgrims have lost their lives during the trek.

Evacuation and Enforcement Measures

The administration has mandated that all pilgrims be brought back to the base camp, with strict action promised against violators. Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shekhar, in coordination with Home Guards and the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Kinnour, will deploy adequate forces to ensure the safe return of pilgrims. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kalpa has been directed to coordinate with relevant departments, tourism associations, panchayats, and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the cancellation.

Public Advisory

The Kinnour district administration has appealed to the public and pilgrims to cooperate in the interest of safety and refrain from undertaking the yatra until further notice. Authorities are prioritizing the safe evacuation of pilgrims and the prevention of further incidents in the region.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, 2025, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed significant loss of life and injury. A total of 276 deaths have been reported, with 143 attributed to landslides, floods, cloudbursts, drowning, and electrocution. Additionally, 336 people have been injured, and 37 remain missing, highlighting the severity of the monsoon’s impact.
