India Weather Update: Monsoon Activity and Forecasts for August 2025

Introduction

As the monsoon season progresses, India is experiencing significant weather activity influenced by multiple weather systems. This blog post provides a detailed overview of the current weather patterns, forecasts, and warnings across various regions of India, along with agromet advisories for farmers and livestock management tips. The information presented here is sourced from Press Release Number 4227 issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi, dated August 17, 2025.

Current Weather Systems

Monsoon Trough and Low-Pressure Areas

The monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal trajectory, contributing to intensified weather activity. A fresh low-pressure area formed over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, at 0830 hrs IST on August 17, 2025. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards, potentially intensifying into a depression within the next 24 hours and crossing the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by the forenoon of August 19, 2025.

Additionally, a low-pressure area from south Chhattisgarh has moved west-northwestward and is now centered over Vidarbha and its neighboring areas as of 0830 hrs IST on August 17, 2025. It is likely to weaken gradually and reach Gujarat as a remnant cyclonic circulation by the morning of August 18, 2025.

Cyclonic Circulations and Troughs

An upper air cyclonic circulation is present over the Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Gujarat-Konkan regions, affecting weather patterns in West India. Another cyclonic circulation lies over central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab at lower tropospheric levels. A trough extends from the Northeast Arabian Sea to the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, influencing rainfall distribution across north Marathwada, Vidarbha, and south Chhattisgarh.
