Uttarakhand Embraces Winter’s Early Chill: Snowfall, Rains & Travel Advisories

Uttarakhand is currently experiencing a dramatic shift in its weather, as high-altitude regions welcome the season’s first snowfall, while the plains are drenched by unseasonal heavy rains. This sudden change has led to a significant drop in temperatures across the state, bringing an early onset of winter-like conditions.

First Snowfall Blankets High Peaks

As predicted by the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), the weather took a sudden turn, resulting in the season’s inaugural snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand on October 6 and 7. Iconic pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath Dham and Hemkund Sahib, along with other high peaks in both Garhwal and Kumaon regions including Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Auli, and Munsyari, are now draped in a pristine white cover. Pilgrims visiting Kedarnath were seen delighting in the fresh snowfall, which commenced around 1:30 p.m. in the Dham area.

Rains Lash the Plains, Intensifying the Chill

While the mountains received snow, the plains, including the capital Dehradun and Mussoorie, experienced light to moderate, and at times, heavy rainfall. Dehradun recorded 20 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, contributing to an increased chill across the state. The heavy rainfall in Dehradun and Mussoorie, continuing for several hours, was noted as unusual for this time of the year.

Temperature Plunge and Warnings

The combination of snowfall and rain has led to a significant drop in temperatures. Dehradun saw its maximum temperature fall by nine degrees to 24 degrees Celsius in just two days. The cold has intensified considerably in the Kedar valley and the Dham.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and snowfall over the coming days. Consequently, heavy rain and landslide warnings have been issued across the state for eight districts. Due to the inclement weather, the Chamoli district administration took proactive steps, suspending trekking activities on October 6 and 7.

Advisory for Pilgrims and Travelers

Authorities have strongly advised against unnecessary travel and urged caution for those planning to visit the region. Pilgrims, in particular, are recommended to carry adequate warm clothing and take extra precautions, especially as the Kedarnath pilgrimage is in its concluding phase before the temple portals close for winter on October 23. Bonfires have been arranged at various locations for the convenience of devotees enduring the freezing weather. The fresh spell of snow has, however, enhanced the divine beauty of Baba Kedar’s shrine, making it appear even more resplendent amidst the white cover.

Residents and tourists are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather advisories before making any travel plans to ensure safety.
