Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall: IMD Issues Alerts and Warnings

Tamil Nadu is currently under a significant weather watch, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across the state for the coming days, particularly until October 10. The wet spell is attributed to an atmospheric low-pressure area off the Tamil Nadu coast in the southwest Bay of Bengal, coupled with another system over southern India.

Districts Under Orange and Yellow Alerts

An Orange Alert has been issued for 12 districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain at isolated places. These districts include Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Nilgiris, and Tirupattur. Additionally, a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for 10 to 15 districts, with specific mention of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Vellore, Trichy, Erode, Salem, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and others.

Light to moderate rain with winds of 30-40 km/h is expected in many parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Districts such as Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, and Thiruvarur are also likely to experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Fishermen Warned to Avoid Sea Travel

In light of the strong wind warnings and anticipated adverse weather conditions, fishermen have been strongly advised by the IMD to avoid venturing into the sea. Public safety remains a top priority, and residents, particularly in hilly and low-lying regions, are urged to stay vigilant for potential waterlogging and landslides that may occur due to heavy rainfall.

Chennai Weather Outlook

For the capital city, Chennai, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy. Residents can anticipate one or two spells of light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. The maximum temperature in Chennai is forecasted to be around 34°C, with the minimum settling between 26-27°C. There’s also a forecast for a gradual dip in day temperatures by 2°C–3°C across parts of Tamil Nadu starting from October 8.
