Nagaland Braces for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms: An Urgent Weather Advisory

Nagaland is currently under a significant weather alert, as the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a four-day advisory predicting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across the state from October 8 to October 11, 2025. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution to safeguard lives and property during this period.

Districts on High Alert for Intense Rainfall

While moderate to light rain is expected in most parts of the state until October 11, specific districts are anticipated to experience particularly heavy downpours. Kiphire, Kohima, Mokokchung, Peren, and Tuensang are forecasted to witness heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorms and lightning on October 9 and 10. These conditions could lead to disruptions in communication and connectivity due to strong winds and lightning strikes.

Vulnerability to Flash Floods and Landslides

Lowland and foothill areas, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, are highly vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods due to anticipated high precipitation in the hill sectors. The NSDMA has highlighted the risk of landslides in hilly regions, urging residents to be vigilant for sudden changes in water levels in streams, unusual sounds like cracking trees or rolling boulders, and to avoid the path of debris flow.

Essential Precautionary Measures

The NSDMA has issued comprehensive safety guidelines for residents:

For Flood-Prone Areas:

  • Keep valuable documents and items in safe lockers to prevent loss and damage.
  • Evacuate low-lying areas if advised by authorities.
  • Avoid entering floodwaters or driving through flooded areas.
  • Disconnect and place electrical appliances off ground level.
  • Boil water before drinking or use chlorinated water.
  • Be alert to any open drain holes or flood channels.

For Landslide-Prone Hilly Areas:

  • Remain alert during heavy rainfall and continuous damp weather.
  • Stay out of the path of a landslide or debris flow.
  • Listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or rolling boulders.
  • Be alert for a sudden increase in the volume of water in streams and a transformation from clear to muddy water.

All District Disaster Management Authorities and other related departments have been directed to remain on high alert to ensure public safety.
