Maharashtra Weather Update

Maharashtra has been experiencing a dynamic weather pattern as the southwest monsoon makes its delayed exit, coupled with unexpected rainfall across several districts. While the typical withdrawal of the monsoon usually commences around October 5, this year saw a stall since September 26, primarily due to various weather systems impacting the region.

Monsoon’s Delayed Farewell

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that conditions have become favorable for the monsoon’s further retreat from parts of Maharashtra over the next three to four days. The complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Maharashtra, including major cities like Mumbai and Pune, is now anticipated to finalize between October 10 and 11, 2025. This delay was influenced by an initial low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which later intensified into Cyclone Shakti over the Arabian Sea, drawing away significant moisture and disrupting typical wind patterns.

Yellow Alerts and Heavy Rainfall

Despite the monsoon’s impending withdrawal, several parts of Maharashtra have been under a heavy rain alert. On October 8, 2025, a yellow alert was issued for 10 districts, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and moderate to heavy rainfall.

Districts under Yellow Alert:

  • Konkan: Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg
  • Western Maharashtra: Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Solapur
  • Marathwada: Dharmashiv, Latur
  • Eastern Vidarbha: Gadchiroli, Chandrapur

Other areas like Thane, Palghar, and certain parts of eastern Vidarbha also faced heavy rain expectations. Marathwada specifically saw predictions for light to moderate rain with thunderstorms from October 7 to 11. Rainfall activity across the state is generally expected to continue until October 10, 2025.

Pune’s Plunge in Temperatures

Meanwhile, Pune has experienced a notable drop in temperatures, signaling a transition towards cooler weather. On October 7, 2025, Pashan recorded the season’s lowest minimum temperature at 18.1°C, while Shivajinagar registered 19°C. This cooling trend is attributed to clear skies and reduced atmospheric moisture as the city enters its post-monsoon phase. Residents can anticipate mostly dry weather from October 10 onwards, with days ranging between 30°C and 35°C and nights cooling down to 16°C to 22°C, heralding the early winter conditions.

Looking Ahead

As Maharashtra navigates this period of changing weather, residents are advised to stay updated with local weather advisories and take necessary precautions, especially in districts under rainfall alerts. The shift from monsoon to post-monsoon brings with it a mix of lingering rains and the promise of cooler, drier days ahead, typical of the October transition.
