An Unprecedented Early Winter
The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, along with parts of Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, are currently experiencing heavy snowfall. This phenomenon signifies an early arrival of winter, with some mountainous regions witnessing snowfall that has broken a 30-year record.
Areas such as the high-altitude regions of Kullu, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti districts have been particularly affected, transforming into pristine winter wonderlands. Specific locations like Gondhla, Keylong, Hansa, and Kukumseri have received substantial snow. The mercury has plunged, with Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti recording a chilling minus 2.5°C, making it the coldest spot in the state. Other higher areas are grappling with temperatures between -2°C and -5°C.
Disruptions and Roadblocks
While picturesque, the heavy snowfall has led to significant disruptions. The vital Manali-Leh road, a lifeline for connectivity, remains blocked, halting vehicular movement towards Ladakh at Darcha. Remote villages, especially in the tribal Pangi valley, are cut off, and the Sach Pass road is closed. Landslides near Tandi have further obstructed the Kullu-Manali route.
In response to these challenging conditions, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has swiftly initiated snow clearance operations at the strategic Zojila Pass. This effort aims to restore traffic flow along the Srinagar-Leh highway, vital for both civilian movement and defence logistics. Authorities have advised travelers to postpone unnecessary journeys until routes are officially declared safe.
Rainfall and IMD Warnings
Beyond the snow, the low and middle hills of Himachal Pradesh have been deluged by moderate to very heavy rainfall. Locations like Naina Devi, Solan, Berthin, and Kasauli have recorded substantial precipitation. Thunderstorms have also swept through Kangra, Palampur, and Shimla, accompanied by gusty winds in Narkanda and Kufri.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for districts including Kullu, Lahaul–Spiti, Chamba, and Kangra, warning of potential heavy rain, snowfall, and strong winds. This early spell of intense weather follows a post-monsoon period (October 1–7) where Himachal Pradesh received 625% excess rainfall compared to normal.
Impact on Local Life and Agriculture
The unexpected and heavy snowfall has significantly impacted local life, particularly the agricultural sector. Apple growers in the Pangi region have suffered considerable losses as apples still on trees were damaged, and transport was brought to a standstill due to blocked roads. Locals are relying on traditional wood fires and heaters to combat the freezing temperatures.
As Himachal Pradesh navigates this early and intense winter, vigilance and preparedness are paramount. Residents and tourists are urged to stay informed about weather advisories and road conditions.
