Tamil Nadu Weather Update 10 October 2025

Tamil Nadu’s Rainy Embrace: Heavy Showers, Fishermen Warnings, and Moderate Chennai Skies

As October unfolds, Tamil Nadu is experiencing a significant shift in its weather patterns, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall across the state. Several districts are bracing for heavy showers, while Chennai and its suburbs anticipate light to moderate precipitation. This wet spell, influenced by atmospheric circulations and the remnants of a cyclonic system, marks a notable contrast to the monsoon withdrawal observed in India’s north-western states, signaling the gradual transition towards the Northeast Monsoon season for the southern peninsula.

Heavy Rain Alerts Issued Across Multiple Districts

The IMD has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in numerous districts across Tamil Nadu for October 9th and extending for several days. Districts under a “Yellow Alert” and expected to receive heavy showers include Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai, and Thanjavur. Some reports indicate that up to 15 districts could be affected by heavy rain due to a lower atmospheric circulation. Areas like Kil Kotagiri Estate in The Nilgiris have already recorded significant rainfall, with 13 cm in a 24-hour period.

This weather activity is largely attributed to a trough extending from South Odisha to the Comorin area, channeling moisture across the region. Additionally, remnants of Cyclonic Storm ‘Shakhti’ over the Arabian Sea and a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Tamil Nadu coast, are contributing to the wet conditions.

Warnings for Fishermen

In light of the anticipated squally weather, fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea. Strong winds, potentially gusting up to 55 km/h, are expected along the Kerala coast, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, Lakshadweep area, Maldives area, and the adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea from October 8th to 13th. This precaution is crucial to ensure their safety amidst the rough sea conditions.

Chennai’s Forecast: Moderate Rain and Stable Air Quality

For Chennai and its suburbs, the forecast is for generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, expected in some areas. The maximum temperature in the city is projected to hover around 33-35°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 24-27°C.

Despite the rain, Chennai’s air quality has remained moderate, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 81 reported on October 9th. PM2.5 levels were measured at 38 µg/m³, primarily influenced by traffic emissions and construction activities. The rainfall, however, is expected to help improve air quality further.

Transitioning Weather Across India

While South Peninsular India, including Tamil Nadu, prepares for increased rainfall, the southwest monsoon is actively withdrawing from the north-western states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. This withdrawal is bringing pleasant, cooler weather to these regions, marking a distinct climatic divide across the country. The current weather in Tamil Nadu is indicative of the typical October pattern for the coastal city, characterized by a combination of warm temperatures and intermittent rainfall, leading into the Northeast Monsoon season.

Residents across Tamil Nadu are advised to stay updated with local weather advisories and take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying and hilly regions where waterlogging and landslides are potential risks.
