As rainfall and thunderstorms intensify in Jharkhand, the festive season’s commercial buzz is being dampened. Traders across key cities are staring at steep losses, just as the Meteorological Department issues warnings of further instability across the state.

Traders in Crisis: Festive Buying Takes a Hit

In Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad, small and medium traders are reporting significant drops in sales — in some cases losses between 25% and 60% compared to normal years.

The Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce & Industries attributes this decline to continuous rain disrupting foot traffic during Durga Puja.

Many traders had stocked up, booked stalls near pandals, and hired staff in anticipation of high demand — but the rains thwarted all expectations.

Weather Alert: Yellow Alert for 17 Districts

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts in Jharkhand, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning.

In that alert, most of the state except for a few northeastern districts (Deoghar, Dumka, Jamtara, Simdega, Pakur, Sahibganj, Godda) is likely to face stormy conditions.

The alert also foresees light rainfall in various zones along with these thunder-wind events.

Jharkhand has recently recorded surplus rainfall, intensifying weather-related challenges.

Over just the past three months, the state has seen 431 casualties attributed to adverse weather — lightning, heavy rain, floods, etc.

Crop damage is also widespread: 2,390 hectares have been affected, especially in districts like Ranchi, Gumla, Lohardaga, Simdega.

There’s also significant damage to houses: thousands of kutcha houses partly or fully damaged, plus permanent structures affected.
