Agricultural Advisory for Assam

Hill Zone

  • Undertake sowing of rabi maize.
  • Current weather (high humidity, moist conditions) favors stem borer and caseworm incidence in Sali rice. Control by draining excess water or spraying Chlorpyriphos (20%) @ 2ml/litre in clear weather.
  • During the flowering stage of sesame crops, use yellow sticky cards and pheromone traps to attract pests like aphids.

Lower Brahmaputra Valley Zone

  • Undertake land preparation for sowing rapeseed and mustard.
  • Continue transplanting cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal, etc., in the main field.
  • Continue sowing of rabi maize.
  • Apply top dressing of Urea fertilizer @ 6 kg per bigha during panicle initiation in Sali rice.
  • Insert around 7 bamboo ‘T’ perches per bigha in paddy fields to serve as roosting places for predatory birds that devour insect larvae and egg masses.

Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone

  • Continue land preparation for rabi pulses like rajma and garden pea.
  • Undertake transplanting of cauliflower and broccoli after heavy rainfall.
  • Undertake land preparation for planting potatoes.
  • Sali rice requires high water during panicle initiation. With moderate rainfall expected in the next 5 days, repair bunds in rice fields to conserve rainwater and maintain standing water at 5±2 cm depth.

Barak Valley Zone

  • Continue land preparation for rabi pulses like rajma and garden pea.
  • Continue nursery sowing of mid-season varieties of cauliflower, broccoli, and brinjal.
  • Stem borer and leaf folder incidence may occur in late-sown Sali rice at the tillering stage. Spray Fipronil 5 SC @ 50 ml per bigha in fair weather for effective control.

Central Brahmaputra Valley Zone

  • Continue nursery bed preparation and sowing of early cauliflower, mid-season broccoli, winter brinjal, black gram, and green gram.
  • Continue sowing of rabi maize.
  • Due to favorable weather, stem borer and hispa attacks may occur in rice fields. Spray Flubendiamide 39.35SC @ 1.25 ml per 10 liters of water in fair weather.
  • Sigatoka leaf spot may appear on banana plants. Spray Carbendazim @ 0.5g/litre of water at first appearance, followed by 4 sprays at 30-day intervals. Keep banana orchards weed-free and avoid water stagnation.

North Bank Plain Zone

  • Continue sowing of winter brinjal and cole crops.
  • Apply Malathion dust (2% dust at 25 kg/ha) or Chlorpyriphos dust (1.5%) along rice field bunds to control rice hispa and prevent larval migration to other rice fields.

By adhering to these guidelines, farmers can effectively manage crops and mitigate pest and weather-related challenges in Assam.
