Tips for West Bengal and Sikkim Farmers 3 to 7 October 2025

Agricultural Recommendations for West Bengal & Sikkim

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal

Hill Zone

  • Drainage in Paddy Fields: Drain out excess rainwater from paddy fields.
  • Ginger Disease Management: Uproot and destroy disease-infected clumps of ginger.
  • Cardamom Harvesting: Start harvesting cardamom in low and mid-latitude regions when the topmost capsule turns brown during fair weather. Store harvested produce in a safe place.

Terai Zone

  • Paddy Water Management: Maintain a 2-3 cm water level in paddy fields.
  • Khaira Disease Control: To control Khaira disease (due to Zinc deficiency), spray chelated Zinc @ 0.5-1.0g per litre of water during clear weather.
  • Epilachna Beetle in Bitter Gourd: At the fruit maturity stage, remove and burn eggs and baby beetles at the initial stage of infestation. For high infestation, apply Carbaryl @ 2.5g, Carbosulfan @ 2ml, or (Chlorpyriphos + Cypermethrin) @ 1.5ml per litre of water during clear weather.
  • Fruit and Shoot Borer in Chilli: Remove and burn all infected plant parts to control fruit and shoot borer.

Old Alluvial Zone

  • Blast Disease in Aman Paddy: Avoid top dressing with nitrogenous fertilizer if blast disease is present. Apply Potassium @ 5-6 kg per bigha as top dressing during fair weather.
  • Powdery Mildew in Pointed Gourd: If powdery mildew is observed, spray Carbendazim @ 5g or Zineb @ 20g per 10 litres of water during clear weather. Provide additional support to pointed gourd plants to prevent lodging.

Gangetic West Bengal

Coastal Saline Zone

  • Fertilizer Application in Rice: Under favorable weather, apply the last top dressing of Potash fertilizer @ 4-5 kg per bigha in rice during clear weather.
  • Cauliflower Water Management: Ensure proper water removal arrangements to prevent wilting in cauliflower.

Laterite and Red Soil Zone

  • Rice Disease Management: Under cloudy and humid conditions, rice is susceptible to Blast, Brown Spot, and Sheath Blight. Monitor fields regularly and apply Propiconazole or Hexaconazole @ 0.6–1g per litre of water during clear weather.
  • Groundnut Field Operations: Avoid all field operations during rain and thunderstorms to ensure safety and protect crops.

New Alluvial Zone

  • Sheath Blight in Rice: High humidity and water stagnation favor sheath blight development. Drain excess water, reduce nitrogen fertilizer use, and apply biofungicides like Trichoderma or Pseudomonas Fluorescens.
  • Jute Fibre Storage: If jute fibre drying is complete, store it in a dry place for marketing.
