Agricultural Advisory for Tamil Nadu Farmers

Introduction

This advisory is sourced from the National Agromet Advisory Service Bulletin, issued by the Agricultural Meteorology Division, India Meteorological Department, Pune. It provides tailored guidance for farmers across various zones in Tamil Nadu to optimize agricultural practices based on expected weather conditions.

North Eastern Zone

Rice and Sugarcane Management

Farmers should continue transplanting rice, taking advantage of anticipated rainfall. For five-month-old sugarcane crops, detrashing and propping are recommended to ensure healthy growth. Ensure proper drainage in rice nurseries to prevent waterlogging.

Western Zone

Adjustments Due to Heavy Rainfall

With heavy rainfall expected, postpone spraying and other cultural operations. Delay maize sowing until weather conditions improve. Due to cloudy weather reducing root activity, avoid applying fertilizers through the soil.

Coastal Zone

Pest Management in Rice

The weather is conducive to rice stem borer infestations. To control this pest, release the parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum at 100,000 per hectare during the active tillering stage (37, 44, and 51 days after planting). Alternatively, apply Azadirachtin 0.03% at 4 ml per liter, Cartap hydrochloride 50% SP at 2 grams per liter, Flubendiamide 20 WG at 0.25 grams per liter, or Thiamethoxam 25 WG at 0.2 grams per liter during clear weather.

Cauvery Delta Zone

Crop Management Precautions

Postpone irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticide applications for rice and banana crops due to expected weather conditions. Ensure adequate drainage in cropped fields to prevent water accumulation where necessary.

High Rainfall Zone

Banana and Rice Crop Support

Provide mechanical support to banana plantations to prevent lodging due to heavy rainfall. To control stem borer attacks in rice, apply Chlorpyriphos 20% EC at 1.25 liters per hectare.

High Altitude Hilly Zone

Wilt Management in Pepper

To manage wilt in pepper crops, apply Trichoderma asperellum or Bacillus subtilis at 25 grams per vine, along with neem cake at 500 grams per vine. These applications should be done during rain-free periods to ensure effectiveness.

Southern Zone

Support for Perennial Crops

Undertake propping in sugarcane fields and provide adequate support to banana, papaya, and moringa crops to prevent lodging due to strong winds or heavy rainfall.
